Steam shower FAQ's

How much does the steam function cost to run?
The steam functions cost surprisingly little to run. Based on current costs for electricity to operate the steam function for a recommended maximum of half and hour is around 30-50 pence. Compare this to the cost of travelling to a Sauna in a Health Spa or gym and paying for the membership and you're really making a saving for more information see our calculator here - https://Posh.co.uk/blog/steam-shower-sauna-and-whirpool-bath-running-costs/
What are the electrical requirements of a Steam Shower?
You should always seek advice from an electrician prior to installing your shower and also view the installation instructions in this regard. 3kw Steam Showers (without Whirlpool baths) require only a single 13amp electrical supply. With whirlpool require two Typically the shower is supplied with a standard UK socket - this is used for testing ONLY and this is removed when you install as the use of sockets within bathrooms is dangerous/illegal. Please refer to a qualified electrician who will be able to install the shower via an Isolated Fused Spur.
What's the water pressure required for your showers?
Steam showers require between 1 and 3 bar of pressure at the unit to operate. For optimum results 2-3 bar is recommended. Please note that all Steam Cabins require a flow rate of at least 7.5 litres per minute and steam showers around 14 litres. The water supply to the unit must also be balanced. If you have a combi boiler, this typically provides water at a pressure suitable for the shower, but if you are unsure, ask your plumber to check the pressure for you. If you have a Combination (combi) boiler, you WILL need a PEV. (pressure equalisation valve) If you have gravity fed water, or your water pressure is not high enough, then fitting a Pump will help. We highly recommend Salamander pumps. Fitting a pump does not require a PEV to be used as the water is balanced. PLEASE ASK YOUR PLUMBER FOR MORE DETAILS
Do I need to tile under or behind the unit?
It is recommended that you fully tile under your shower, steam shower or whirlpool bath, this is because they are designed to be freestanding and as such may be required to be slid away from the wall for service access. Tiling fully under the tub enables you to slide the shower/whirlpool with ease. Tiling behind your shower is optional as the glass at the rear of the cabin is not transparent. We would recommend that you only need to tile one or two rows of tile behind the edges to ensure a tidy finish.
I'm in a hard water area, can I still have a shower?
Yes. If you know you live in a Hard water area, you may well have a water softener fitted to your water supply to remove the build-up, if not you must fit one for the water purpose of most manufacturers, as this will protect the steam generator from gathering any damaging calcium build up. A water softener will also protect the lives of many household appliances, such as Washing Machines, Kettles and of course your shower. Typical signs of Hard water are the build of 'fur' in your kettle.

Can a flip-down seat be used on any shower in place of the stool?
The quick answer is yes, however. only on showers where the center column it attaches to is made from metal. We have a small percentage of showers where this column is made from glass and as such is not strong enough for it. Where the column is metal, a flip-down seat can be fitted, even if not advertised with the product. Why is it not advertised? For steam showers, it is because to fit the seat you would need to temporarily remove the steam generator from its fixings to fit the seat, before placing the generator back. this is not too difficult, only a 5-minute task, however, not everyone would expect to have to do this so it is not advertised but if you're prepared to take the extra time and you want the flip-down seat, by all means, you can have one :)
How much electricity will my item use?
To work out how much our Steam Showers, Sauna's, Whirlpool Baths or indeed any product costs to run, is a question of the amount of KW's or watts the item uses, multiplied by how long they are used and then multiply the cost per KW per hour you have on your utility bill Let's break it down a little: According to THIS WEBSITE HERE - the average cost per KW (1000 watts) is about £0.15p per hour at the time of writing So, if a steam shower, for example, is 2.8KW's, to run it on full power for 1 hour the most it could ever cost you would be £0.42p 2.8 x 0.15 = £0.42 per hour One thing to note is that in the case of a steam shower, they do not run constantly, only producing steam to 'top-up' the temperature and keep it constant once it has reached the user's desired temperature. So the actual cost is less than the above for a sauna session. (The above being the most severe possible if the shower doors were left open for example and the generator was constantly running which it does not) Now let's look at some other example items: The Vidalux 2 Person Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna is rated at 2300w (2.3kw) so given a running cost of the maximum setting of £0.35p per hour (2.3 x 0.15) The Vidalux 4 person is 2800w and has a maximum running cost of just £0.42 per hour You can apply the same calculation to any unit if you simply multiply to KW or Watts by the average cost per KW per hour The Comparison Gym membership - £40 per monthFuel costs to get to the gym and the lost travel time Cost of a pint of beer or glass of wine, your choice of branded face mask or moisturising cream........ The list is endless but the comparison of the benefits is not!! We have Standard Boiler fitted with Pump upto 4 bar pressure . Will that work for 2 Steam showers that I am looking to buy
Yes absolutely. The minimum we would recommend is 1.5bar for the steam showers to ensure reasonable performance. To enable the jets and a very good flow from the overhead monsoon 2 bar or more would be ideal. With 4 bar you have very, very good pressure. You may have slightly diminished performance if both showers are in full use at the same time (jets and monsoon in use on both) due to the demand on the pipe capacity more than anything, but the steam function will not be affected.
We want to install a steam shower cubicle in an outbuilding which only has mains cold water supply. What are our options for a steam shower... is a power shower option available?
A cold only fed is not an option for steam showers I'm afraid. This is because there would be no showering option. A cold only fed would need an electric shower to be inside the cabin, electric showers are not able to be installed in environments that do not allow the condensation (steam) to escape as this is a higher 'IP' rating than the electric shower lawfully allows
